At IT Naturally, we believe IT should evolve with your business, not hold it back. That’s exactly what we’re working on with one of our longest-standing customers, Condor Airlines.
After a successful AWS migration of their main cloud environment last year, we’re now kicking off a new project: fully virtualising Condor’s network infrastructure. That means moving everything out of their physical data centre in Frankfurt and into a cloud-native environment on AWS.
Why now?
A change in circumstances prompted a closer look at the existing IT setup. What began as a practical decision soon turned into a broader opportunity. This wasn’t just about reacting to change, it was a chance to modernise.
Condor saw the moment as a natural time to move away from legacy systems and embrace a more agile, scalable, and future-ready IT environment. One that better supports their direction of travel.
What we’re building together
This project is all about helping Condor build a unified, AWS-native network that fits seamlessly into the rest of their cloud environment.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
One seamless environment
No more bouncing between cloud and physical hardware.
Cost-efficiency over time – Simplified licensing, no hardware overhead.
By transitioning to a fully cloud-native model, Condor moves away from capital-intensive infrastructure towards a flexible OpEx-based approach. There’s no longer a need to forecast hardware lifecycles, budget for physical replacements, or navigate complex enterprise licensing agreements. Instead, resources are provisioned and billed based on actual consumption, enabling tighter cost control, reduced waste, and predictable spend. With AWS-native tools for monitoring and optimisation, Condor can fine-tune resource usage and eliminate unnecessary overhead—delivering long-term value and financial clarity.
True scalability – Freedom to grow, flex, and adapt without infrastructure constraints.
With a fully cloud-native architecture, Condor can scale infrastructure and applications dynamically in response to real-world demand—whether it’s sudden traffic spikes, business growth, or trialling new services. AWS delivers the elasticity to expand or contract resources instantly, without overprovisioning or the delays of traditional infrastructure planning. Compute, storage, and networking resources can be spun up in minutes, enabling Condor to remain agile and cost-efficient while aligning IT capacity to business strategy.
Access to modern tools – Enabling automation, enhanced security, and rapid innovation.
Migrating fully into AWS gives Condor access to a powerful suite of cloud-native tools and services. From infrastructure automation and advanced security features to AI/ML workloads and serverless computing, teams now operate in an environment built for speed and resilience. Integration with the AWS Marketplace also simplifies access to third-party solutions—such as FortiGate VMs—streamlining the rollout of enterprise-grade networking and security. This modern toolset empowers Condor to accelerate development cycles, reduce risk, and build future-ready services with confidence.
A few (big) challenges
As with any major transformation, this one comes with its fair share of complexity:
- Designing a fully cloud-native network
We’re creating something stable and secure, while also making sure it’s flexible enough to grow with the A cloud-native network requires careful planning of VPC architecture, security controls (like Security Groups and NACLs), routing, and scaling considerations. Unlike traditional networks, the design must anticipate rapid changes in scale, service integrations, and evolving application needs. - Managing over 30 third-party vendors
From inflight services to crew scheduling, many vendors rely on Condor’s network to operate critical services. Each integration needs careful transition planning to avoid service disruptions. Some vendors may require VPNs, Direct Connect, or application-layer integrations, each with different timelines and technical constraints. A segmented, scalable approach is essential to maintaining secure, stable vendor access. - Building confidence in the change
We’re supporting Condor’s internal teams and stakeholders through the transition, especially those who feel more comfortable with traditional, physical infrastructure.
What’s next?
The project is already underway. Right now, we’re deep into Phase 1: designing and implementing the AWS-based network architecture. By July, we’ll move into vendor migration, followed by the final push to switch off the physical hardware.
